Recyclability of Waste Cord of Synthetic Fibers as Matrix Material for Thermoplastic Hybrid Composites

The hybrid composites were molded using the waste cord of synthetic fabrics as a matrix material, wherein continuous glass and carbon fibers were used for the reinforcements and were fed directly into the injection molding machine together with the waste cord. The measured tensile strength and tensile modulus of the molded composites were much higher than those of the matrix material, and they increase with increasing carbon fiber content. It is concluded that the molding system devised herein shows promise for contributing to the material recycling of waste cord of synthetic fabrics.

Key Words: hybrid composite • waste cord of synthetic fibers • recycling • injection molding method
